How Do I Know If a Breast Change Needs Checking?

woman 4.png

If you notice a change in your breast, chest, nipple or underarm area, you may wonder whether it is something that needs checking.

Many breast changes are not serious, but any new, unusual or persistent change should be checked by a qualified health professional. Getting checked does not mean something is wrong. It simply means you are listening to your body and taking good care of yourself.

Breast awareness is not about fear. It is about knowing what is normal for you, so you can notice when something feels different.

What breast changes should I pay attention to?

Please see your doctor or health practitioner if you notice:

  • A new lump in the breast, chest or underarm

  • A lump that feels hard, fixed or different from the surrounding tissue

  • A new area of thickening

  • A change in the size or shape of one breast

  • Swelling in the breast, chest, armpit or around the collarbone

  • Skin dimpling, puckering, redness, heat or thickening

  • Skin that looks different from normal

  • A nipple that turns inward or changes direction

  • Nipple discharge, especially if it happens without squeezing

  • Blood or unusual fluid from the nipple

  • A rash, crusting or change around the nipple

  • Persistent pain in one area

  • Any change that feels unusual for your body

You do not need to know what the change means before you book an appointment. That is what your health professional is there for.

Are fibrocystic breast changes the same as breast cancer?

No. Fibrocystic breast changes are not the same as breast cancer.

However, you should not try to diagnose a lump or breast change yourself. Some harmless breast changes can feel worrying, and some serious changes may not feel painful at all.

The safest approach is to get any new, unusual or persistent breast change checked.

What if I am not sure whether it is serious?

If you are unsure, it is still okay to get checked.

Some women worry they are overreacting. Others wait because they feel embarrassed, busy, scared or unsure. But checking a breast change is a normal and sensible part of looking after yourself.

You are not wasting anyone’s time.

If something feels different from your normal, book an appointment.

Regular breast care: self-checking from love, not fear

Breast awareness does not need to be a once-a-month fear-based check.

At Natural Breast Care, we see regular breast care as an ongoing relationship with your body. It is about gently noticing, touching, caring for and connecting with your breast and chest area throughout the month.

This might happen when you apply balm, shower, dry brush, massage, get dressed or simply place your hands over your heart for a quiet moment.

The aim is not to search for something wrong. The aim is to know your body from a place of love, so you can notice what feels normal for you and recognise when something feels different.

Regular breast care can be simple, gentle and reassuring. It may become a small ritual of body awareness, softness and self-respect.

If you do notice a new, unusual or persistent change, that is the time to book a check-up with a qualified health professional.

What does “know your normal” mean?

Every woman’s breasts are different. Some breasts feel soft and even. Some feel naturally lumpy, textured or tender. Some change throughout the menstrual cycle. Some change with pregnancy, breastfeeding, menopause, surgery, weight changes, stress or age.

Knowing your normal means gently becoming familiar with:

  • The look of your breasts and chest

  • The feel of your breast tissue

  • The shape and direction of your nipples

  • How your breasts change during your cycle

  • How your breast and underarm area usually feels

  • Any scars, tender areas or changes from surgery

The more familiar you are with your own body, the easier it is to notice when something has changed.

How do I check my breasts and chest area?

You can check your breasts in a way that feels calm and simple.

Look in the mirror and notice any changes in shape, skin, nipples or symmetry.

Raise your arms and look again.

Use the pads of your fingers to gently feel around the breast, chest and underarm area.

Feel around the collarbone and upper chest.

Notice any new lump, thickening, swelling or tender area.

Do not press aggressively or dig into the tissue.

If you notice anything new or unusual, book a check-up.

What should I do if I find a lump?

If you find a new lump, try not to panic.

Many breast lumps are not cancer, but a new lump should always be checked. Make an appointment with your doctor or health professional. They may examine the area and, if needed, arrange further imaging or tests.

Do not try to massage the lump away. Do not wait for months to see what happens. And do not rely on internet searches to decide whether it is serious.

Getting checked is the kindest next step.

Gentle self-care while waiting for an appointment

Waiting for an appointment can feel emotional. During this time, it may help to support your nervous system and treat your body gently.

You may like to:

  • Take slow breaths with your hands over your heart

  • Wear soft, comfortable clothing

  • Avoid pressing repeatedly on the area

  • Write down what you noticed and when

  • Ask someone supportive to come with you

  • Stay away from frightening internet searches

  • Remind yourself that checking is an act of care

You are allowed to feel nervous. You are also allowed to feel calm. There is no right way to feel.
